The SEA Games champion was outstanding in the men's rings' qualification and with 14.566 points was top of the eight finalists going into the last stage.

In the final, he secured 14.166 points to finish second below Chinese Yin De Hang who scored 14.200 points.

Yang Yanzhi, another Chinese gymnast, also had 14.166 points and shared the second position with Phong.

Phong said his performance was better than that last year when he also took a silver. However, it was not enough to bring gold home. He would have to do better for the next competition.

Coach Trương Minh Sang said Phong did really good job but Yin delivered a better performance in the final.

Two other Vietnamese qualifiers for final rounds were Trịnh Hải Khang in the men's vault. He placed fifth overall. Đặng Ngọc Xuân Thiện was fourth in the men's pommel horse.

The championship will wrap up today. VNS
