VietNamNet Bridge – Gieng Vua (King’s Well) was discovered in the southeast corner of the Nam Giao Esplanade at the Ho Dynasty Citadel, Thanh Hoa province.



Archaeologist Tran Anh Dung, who was directly involved in the excavation and restoration of wells, said the well was built to serve ritual performers, who had to clean themselves before making rites.

 

 

 
 

 

 

 

 
 

The well was unearthed in 2004. At the fourth excavation of the Nam Giao Esplanade in 2009-2011, archaeologists unearthed the architecture of the well.

The well is square, with a stone embankment and nine steps. The shaft is round and the depth is 5.6m. The structure of the well is a symbol of heaven and earth.
