VietNamNet Bridge – Hanoi authorities have decided to bend a $340 million road to preserve a banian tree hundreds of years old. The decision has been applauded by local people.
The Hanoi belt road 2 project, from Nhat Tan to Xuan La – Buoi - Cau Giay, has a length of 6.4 km and a total investment of $304.7 million. It kicked off in March 2012. So far the clearance has completed and the section from Nhat Tan to Xuan La has also built. The Xuan La-Buoi-Cau Giay nearly finishes.
On this road, there is a banian tree of 20m at the section passing the village of Nghia Do, Cau Giay District. Locals said the tree is more than 100 years old and it is the spirit of the local community.
To keep the tree, Hanoi authorities have decided to bend the road and the decision is warmly supported by local residents.
Locals said the banian tree was attached to the childhood of many generations in the village.
Not far from the tree, the ancient communal house of Nghia Do Village was removed to serve the project.
An overpass is being built on this place.
Along the segment from Nhat Tan Bridge to Cau Giay, some big trees have not been removed yet.
Another ancient banyan tree, about 1km from the tree in Nghia Do village, has also been retained although it is located in the middle of the road.
This road will be opened for travel by the year end.
