The contest was for Dong Cao or Dong Tao chicken only. This is a unique Vietnamese breed. It is a traditional chicken breed in Dong Tao commune. People used to raise the chickens to use meat in ritual offerings and summer festivals. Some even say the chicken used to be a dish for kings. Recently, a pure Dong Tao chicken was sold for over 1 tael of gold (nearly $2,000).
Chicken contestants are numbered.
At least 56 pairs of chicken of farmers from four village of Dong Tao village took part in the contest.

The chickens compete in three categories: couples, roosters and hens.
