The 12th of July marked the 20th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and the US, so the US Embassy in Hanoi organised a ceremony to commemorate the event on July 2 with the participation of Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and former US President Bill Clinton who officially announced the normalisation of the relations with Vietnam 20 years ago, paving the way for historic engagement. 

20 years ago, on July 11, 1995 President Clinton’s announcement on normalising the diplomatic ties with Vietnam rapidly spread around the world. One day later, on July 12, 1995 in Hanoi Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet announced the establishment of diplomatic ties with the US.

The event became the hottest news, drawing special attention from the world public because the bilateral relations between the two countries started entering into a new phase.

Since then, with  joint efforts from the two countries’ governments and peoples and the spirit of reconciliation and moving into the future together, the bilateral relations have made great progress in all fields, including the establishment of a comprehensive partnership in 2013 during State President Truong Tan Sang’s visit to the US at the invitation of President Barack Obama.
