VietNamNet Bridge – Airports Corporation of Vietnam, the Ministry of Transport and the People’s Committee in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang hosted an inaugural ceremony of Phu Quoc International Airport on December 15.

The ceremony was attended by Prime Minster Nguyen Tan Dung, former Party Secretary General Le Kha Phieu, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh and leaders of ministries and central and local departments.  

Phu Quoc International Airport is the first international airport built with 100 percent capital investment of Airports Corporation of Vietnam.

The airport was built at a cost of VND3 trillion (US$144 million) and can serve more than 2.65 million passengers a year.

The Airport meets 4E standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization to accommodate modern aircrafts like Boeing 747-400.

Three airline companies of Vietnam have registered to operate in Phu Quoc International Airport including Vietnam Airlines (VNA), Air Mekong and VietJet Air. Some airline companies from Russia, Europe, South Korea and Southeast Asia are also studying the possibility of opening air routes to Phu Quoc Island.

Dao Viet Dung, director general of the Airports Corporation of Vietnam, said that since coming into operation on December 2, Phu Quoc Airport has received an average 22 flights a day with 13,700 passengers, mainly businessmen, investors and visitors.

At present, VNA has 67 flights a week to Phu Quoc Island.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said that the opening of Phu Quoc International Airport is a significant move towards the development of Phu Quoc Island. This will also contribute to the socio-economic development of Kien Giang Province as well as the country.
