This information was revealed at a meeting held between leaders of the Phu Quoc City People's Committee and the Indian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City on May 22.

Addressing the event, Huynh Quang Hung, chairman of island-city Phu Quoc, noted that Indian tourists are keen on travelling to the island in order to explore it and relax.

Most notably, the island has also been chosen as the venue for the super weddings of wealthy Indian couples, and this in turn has created a positive media effect on the island’s tourism image, said the official.

Over the past year, the city has also organised promotional programmes in India to lure billionaires into holding their weddings there.

However, Hung shared that direct flights from India have been suspended due to too few passengers making them uneconomical.

Therefore, he stressed that the island hopes to resume the direct air route in the near future in order to promote tourism development between Phu Quoc and India.

He added that Phu Quoc will create favourable conditions for Indian tourists to visit, live, and work on the island.

For his part, Madan Mohan Sethi, Indian Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, also expressed his hope that India and the island will co-operate to hold a number of cultural events and an international Yoga festival in June, thereby further contributing to developing tourism on both sides.
