Colonel Luong Tan Dinh, spokesman of the Phu Yen Police, said that three people were identified as the ring leaders: Le Binh, 56, Le Tan Sang, 26 and Tran Thanh Hoai, 34. They are all Phu Yen locals.

The other three detainees all have criminal histories.

On a rainy Monday night, the police raided big tents set up on a remote hill in Chinh Nghia Town – about 10km from the province’s capital city of Tuy Hoa.

They caught 95 people, including 38 women, playing gambling games inside the tents. The police seized more than VND168 million (US$7,460) at the scene as well as 30 cars and vans and several motorbikes which were believed to belong to the gamblers.

The players came from various provinces, including Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Dak Nong, Dak Lak and HCM City.

Further investigation is ongoing.
