Hoang Quy Phuoc dominated the men’s competition because his two big rivals - Lam Quang Nhat and Nguyen Duy Khoi of Ho Chi Minh City were absent.

During the five-day competition, Phuoc won up to 15 gold medals of the total 16 categories that he participated in.

Phuoc won 11 individual gold medals and 4 team gold medals. Phuoc set a national record in the men’s 400 meter freestyle when breaking his own previous record (3 minutes 56 seconds 17) with 3 minutes 55 seconds 24 and the men’s 200-meter butterfly with 1 minute 58 seconds 71 (the old record is 1 minute 59 seconds 55 belonging to Vo Thanh Nguyen).

The outstanding achievements of Phuoc took Da Nang to the top with 15 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze medals.

HCM City ranks second, with 13 gold, 1 silver and 5 bronze medals. Hai Phong made the third place with 4 gold, 4 silver medals and 3 bronze medals.

At last year's national championships, Phuoc won 9 gold medals and broke two national records in the men’s 100m free-style and men’s 200m freestyle, helping Da Nang rank 2nd.

After the national champs this year, Phuoc will go to China for a training course under the direction of coach Gao Guishan.
