VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnamese Nguyen Van Phuong and his Romanian partner Nicholas David Ionel won their first Australian Open Junior Championship boys doubles match on January 21 in Melbourne.

They beat Alexandr Binda of Russia and Lodewijk Weststrate from the Netherlands 7-5, 5-7, 10-7 in the first round match in 72 minutes.

They will next face winners of a match between wildcard holders Ken Cavrak and Tom Evans of the hosts and No 8 seed Liam Draxl of Canada and American Zane Khan.

Phuong will continue his singles competition on January 22, playing No 1 Lorenzo Musetti of Italy in the second round.

It is the first time that the Vietnamese have taken part in a Grand Slam for juniors. He is the second Vietnamese athlete to have this opportunity after national No 1 Ly Hoang Nam.
