The 17-year-old player performed well in the junior tournaments in South Korea, Japan and China to earn the right to compete in the Grand Slam. He reached the quarter-finals in men’s doubles at the World Super Junior Tennis Championships in Japan last month.

This will be the first time Phuong – who won the U18 ITF Junior Cicruit G4 – Hải Đăng Cup 2018 – will play in the Grand Slam.

In the world junior rankings announced on Wednesday, the Becamex Binh Duong player ranked 70th.

Vietnam’s top tennis player Ly Hoang Nam has competed in four Grand Slam events. Nam won the men’s doubles title in the 2015 Wimbledon Junior Championship along with his Indian partner Sumit Nagal to become the first Vietnamese tennis player to win a Grand Slam trophy.

At the ongoing Viet Nam Master tennis tournament, Vietravel Cup in Vinh City, Nghe An Province, Phuong defeated veteran Nguyen Dac Tien and Vietnam’s second-ranked player Trinh Linh Giang.
