A dance performance entitled ‘Standards’ by French choreographer Pierre Rigal will premiere on June 6 at the Hanoi Youth Theatre.

In his creation, Rigal stages eight hip hop dancers, who seize upon a collective symbol of – living together – and the French flag, making it a dynamic and dancing research subject.

Thanks to their energy and grace, the dancers move into a blue-white-red rectangular ring of light, which becomes their imaginary territory.

Inside it, they experiment and express an association of ideas and images that can be tied to a flag – national identity, integration, assimilation and standardization.

Is the flag an identitarian closure? Literally or figuratively, Standards asks, on stage, this evolutionary and sometimes elusive question. And, in this way, it questions the individual in the universal and the universal in the individual.

The Standards dance performance has been performed 75 times by the Dernière Minute troupe in 10 countries around the globe.

The troupe was established in November 2003 by French choreographer Pierre Rigal.
