The pinpeat orchestra is considered a valuable asset of the Khmer people in the southern province of Binh Phuoc in particular, as well as those in the southern region more generally. However, the piece of musical heritage is on the edge of falling into oblivion.

Musical instruments at pinpeat orchestra

A pinpeat orchestra is essentially made up of a Cambodian musical band playing traditional Khmer music on traditional Khmer instruments.

In more modern times, not many people know how to play these kinds of instruments, particularly amongst younger generations.

In an attempt to preserve the traditional Khmer music, Loc Ninh district’s Ethnic Boarding High School and Secondary School has equipped itself with pinpeat orchestra instruments, and has hired artisans to teach the music to its students.

Over the past four years, the school’s 20-member musical band has maintained a regularly attended practice session after scheduled classes.

This activity has helped the students become more familiar with the instruments, thus contributing to conserving the traditional values of Khmer people. – VNA
