PM praises Cambodian government

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung made the statement during his meeting with Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni in Phnom Penh yesterday, Jan 14.

The PM expressed his pleasure at visiting Cambodia on the occasion of the country's commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the victory over the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime, which was declared on January 7, 1979.

He hailed the great achievements made by the Cambodian people under the leadership of the King in the cause of national construction for peace, stability and prosperity, affirming the country's increasing role and position in the region and the world.

Praising the King for his important contributions to fostering and enhancing the Viet Nam-Cambodia relationship, Dung said he hoped the King would continue his support for the development of bilateral friendship and co-operation in a strong, practical and effective manner.

He added the Vietnamese Government and people remembered and treasured Cambodia's valuable assistance to Viet Nam in the cause of national construction and defence, as well as in the development of bilateral relations.

The King expressed his pleasure at the steps being taken in co-operation between Viet Nam and Cambodia. He thanked Dung and other leaders for their kindness towards him and the Cambodian royal family.

He said he believed Dung's visit to Cambodia would help promote the relationship between the two countries.

He also took the occasion to thank the Vietnamese State and people for their invaluable support to Cambodia.

In the afternoon of the same day, Dung and his entourage left Phnom Penh, having successfully wrapped up their three-day working visit.

Building bridges

Also yesterday, Dung and his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen yesterday attended the ground-breaking for the construction of the Long Binh–Chrey Thom Bridge, linking Viet Nam's southern province of An Giang to the Cambodian province of Kandal.

The bridge has total investment of over US$38 million, of which Viet Nam has contributed $17.8 million. The remainder is being covered by Cambodia using money borrowed from Viet Nam.

Once opened to the traffic, it will be part of the shortest route between Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh and Viet Nam.

The bridge is expected to facilitate economic and trade development between the two countries, while reducing poverty in border areas.

Dung on this occasion hailed the co-ordination between the Ministry of Construction and the Cambodian side during the planning phase.

The two PMs asked relevant ministries and agencies to work closely together to complete the project as scheduled and mark the comprehensive co-operation between Viet Nam and Cambodia.
