Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Jakarta on September 6, on the occasion of the 43rd ASEAN Summit and related meetings.

Both sides expressed their satisfaction at the positive development of the bilateral comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and agreed to enhance regular all-level contacts to contribute to more effective, substantive and deeper cooperation between the two countries.

Conveying regards from Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, State President Vo Van Thuong, and National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue to Chinese Party General Secretary and President Xi Jinping and other high-ranking leaders, Chinh affirmed that Vietnam considers its relationship with China as a strategic choice and a top priority.

According to him, Vietnamese ministries and agencies are working closely with Chinese relevant agencies to take concerted and effective measures toward realising important common perceptions reached by leaders of the two Parties and countries, including stepping up bilateral high-level exchanges and contacts in the near future.

Xi, for his part, conveyed warm regards from Chinese Party General Secretary and President Xi and other Chinese high-ranking leaders to Party leader Trong and other Vietnamese leaders.

He welcomed PM Chinh's attendance at the opening of the 20th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) and China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit (CABIS) in Nanning, Guangxi, and affirmed readiness to maintain regular high-level exchanges to deepen discussions on issues of shared concerns.

PMs of Vietnam, Japan meet on sidelines of 43rd ASEAN Summit

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his Japanese counterpart Kishida Fumio discussed bilateral relations at their meeting on the sidelines of the 43rd ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Jakarta, Indonesia, on September 6.

Congratulating Japan on its successful hosting of the expanded G7 Summit last May, PM Chinh said he has ordered relevant agencies of Vietnam to work closely with the Japanese side to carry out high-level commitments and agreements, including the outcomes of his previous talks with PM Kishida.

The Japanese leader highly valued Vietnam’s participation in and contributions to the expanded G7 Summit, noting that his country is actively coordinating with Vietnam to prepare for upcoming high-level mutual visits as the two countries are celebrating the 50th founding anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2023.

PM Kishida voiced his hope that the two sides will work closely together to bring the Vietnam - Japan relations to a new height.

At the meeting, PM Chinh hailed the extremely positive and practical strides in all fields of bilateral cooperation. He also spoke highly of the Japanese Government’s policies to recover and develop the economy after the COVID-19 pandemic, especially expanding official development assistance (ODA) cooperation, the semiconductor and digital industries, and the reception of foreign workers.

Vietnam will cooperate closely with Japan to help carry out those policies for the interests of both countries, he affirmed.

To further intensifying bilateral economic and trade links, he called for Japan’s coordination to fruitfully implement economic and ODA cooperation projects, and assistance for Vietnam to develop the North - South high-speed railway as well as urban railways in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

The Vietnamese PM also thanked and suggested the Japanese Government continue providing favourable conditions for the Vietnamese community to live, study, and work in the Northeast Asian nation and contribute more to local socio-economic development.

Both PMs expressed their joy at witnessing the extensive and effective development of the countries’ comprehensive partnership.

Impressed by Vietnam's growth achievements, Trudeau held that the Vietnam-Canada relations have made significant progress, especially in economy and trade, following the sides’ signing of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

The Canadian PM announced that Canada plans to send a business delegation led by its trade minister to Vietnam in 2024 to explore trade and investment opportunities. He also affirmed his readiness to support Vietnam in fulfilling commitments related to labour and the environment within the CPTPP.

Highlighting Canada’s role in Vietnam’s foreign policy, Chinh proposed that the two countries enhance high-level delegation exchanges, especially in 2023, which marks the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. He expressed a wish to soon welcome Trudeau on a visit to Vietnam.

The Vietnamese Government leader expressed his hope that Canada will create more favourable conditions for Vietnamese exports to the nation, provide more scholarships for Vietnamese students, and promote bilateral cooperation in such new areas as digital transformation, green growth, climate change adaptation, and science-technology. Additionally, he proposed the sides enhance tourism cooperation and people-to-people exchange.

Both leaders agreed to strengthen coordination at multilateral forums, including the implementation of the ASEAN-Canada strategic partnership framework and international commitments related to climate change response.

Prime Minister meets Sultan of Brunei in Jakarta

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also met the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah on September 6 on the sideline of the ongoing 43rd ASEAN Summit and related meetings in Jakarta, Indonesia.

At the meeting, both sides reached consensus on the impressive developments in bilateral ties, especially those in the fields of trade, oil and gas, security-defence, and people-to-people exchange.

PM Chinh suggested the two nations work towards the signing of an intergovernmental agreement on rice trading so as to make contributions to ensuring global food security; while promoting cooperation to develop Vietnam’s Halal food industry for export to Brunei.

Vietnam and Brunei should enhance collaboration and exchange experience in petrochemical development, he said, asking the Bruneian side to present scholarships to Vietnamese students and expand training cooperation to the fields of technology, green economy, and digital transformation, among others.

For more substantial developments of the Vietnam-Brunei Comprehensive Partnership, Prime Minister Chinh said it is necessary for the two nations to expand defence-security cooperation and direct exchanges between forces of both sides.

For his part, the Sultan of Brunei spoke highly of the official visit to Brunei by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh earlier this year, saying it has created an impetus for bilateral relations and the effective implementation of the action plan to roll out the comprehensive partnership in 2023-2027.

Expressing his delight at the close cooperation between enterprises of both sides, the Sultan affirmed that he will create favourable conditions for Vietnamese firms to use Brunei’s logistics facilities to boost exports.

Both leaders also reaffirmed their stance on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Prime Minister Chinh took the occasion to repeat an invitation to the Sultan of Brunei to visit Vietnam, and the latter said he will visit the country soon.
