This year, the anniversary commemorating the Hung Kings falls tomorrow (Friday), which with the weekend makes a three-day holiday, while the last weekend of the month plus a day off on Monday, April 29 and the Liberation Day on April 30, as well as May Day, make up a 5-day holiday.

Increased traveling demand, traffic jams and traffic accidents are often seen during the holidays in Viet Nam.

This period is expected to see higher demands on travel because of longer holidays and many provinces nationwide have launched activities to open for the summer holidays in their tourist attractions.

According to the PM, more traffic officers and inspectors will be on duty during the holidays on key traffic routes including National Highways 1, 5, 14, 18, and 51 which are expected to see busier traffic and high possibility of traffic jams.

More inspections will be conducted at railways, ferry stations and coach stations to suspend vehicles that go over the speed limit, overload or fail to meet road safety regulations.

Meanwhile, in a meeting with National Road Safety Committee on Tuesday, Deputy PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc also urged stricter punishments for traffic violators.

He also asked ministries of Industry and Trade, and Public Security to tighten control over helmet production, trade and use, as about 70 per cent of drivers in the country reportedly wear substandard helmets.

In the last two months, a market watch division under the Industry and Trade Ministry has examined over 3,100 helmets makers and traders, finding 1,500 violators, seizing nearly 65,500 fake helmets and having collected fines of nearly VND570 million (US$27,000).

From April 7 to May 17, the Waterway Police Administration is inspecting means of waterway transportation across the country to better crack down on violations and ensure waterway safety.

According to Road and Rail Police Administration, during the two holidays of the same period last year, 121 traffic accidents were recorded, killing 123 people and injured 69.
