Poland on Thursday commemorated the 66th anniversary of the liberation of the German Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Polish Bronislaw Komorowski and German President Christian Wulff attended a ceremony held at the premises of the former Auschwitz death camp. The presidents laid flowers to pay tribute to the victims of the German Nazi death camp.

They also met with survivors of the Nazi death camp and some young people in the International Youth Meeting Center in Auschwitz.

The Auschwitz death camp was established in 1940. Over 1.1 million people were killed there, including Jews, Poles, Roma, and Soviet prisoners.

The Soviet Red Army liberated the camp on January 27, 1945. The day was designated as the International Holocaust Memorial Day by the United Nations in 2005.
