Colonel Nguyen Dang Loi, director of the Bac Ninh Province police, told a press conference yesterday that Nguyen Duc Tiem was arrested in Bac Ninh on January 13 and would be charged with murder.

Tiem is a brother-in-law of Nguyen Van Que, the husband of 29-year-old Nguyen Thi Quynh, who died when her Honda Dream bike with number plate 99L6-4831 exploded on December 1, 2011.

After the explosion, the police found 2 broken pieces of a detonator on the scene which the Ministry of Public Security’s Criminal Science Institute later confirmed to be TNT.

On December 22, the police concluded the case was an intentional murder and tried to track down the culprit.

After screening all suspects, the police focused their attention on Tiem and summoned him for questioning.

Tiem was married to Que’s younger sister and lived next door to Que.

When Quynh gave birth to a baby, Tiem and his wife moved to Que’s house and lived there and the two families had many conflicts.

On November 30, Tiem fixed a TNT explosive to Quynh’s motorbike. In the next morning, the bike exploded, killing Quynh and her daughter Nguyen Khanh Van.

The explosion killed Quynh on the spot while Van died on December 13 in the hospital.

With a good knowledge about explosives, Tiem had fixed the explosive to the motorbike so that when the brake was pressed down, a short circuit would occur in the bike’s power system and then trigger the explosive.

Liem was also the culprit of another bike explosion that occurred in Hai Duong Province on June 18, 2010.

The victim was his friend, Le Duc Trung, 32, who lost his left leg in the explosion.

Tiem told the police that he suspected that his wife had an affair with Trung, so he fixed an explosive to revenge her.

The Hai Duong police have completed their investigation and will soon bring Tiem to court.
