VietNamNet Bridge – On average 830 criminal cases were successfully completed daily in Viet Nam in the first six months of this year, Major-General Do Kim Tuyen, deputy director of Anti-crime Police General Department, said yesterday, July 5.

He said the figure represented 70 per cent of all reported crime.

Three out of five criminal prosecutions involved drugs, he said, adding that 134kg of heroin had been seized this year.

More than 22,000 criminals belonging to 1,800 gangs were arrested in the first six months of this year, he said.

"Hi-tech crime increased as did transnational crime," he added.

Some 5,300 corruption cases were also discovered by police, a 6.5 per cent rise against the same period last year.

Tuyen said attacks against the police were a continuing problem, adding that five policemen were killed in the line of duty so far this year.

Since 1998, 90 police officers have been killed at work, according to Major-General Phan Van Vinh, director of the Anti-crime Police General Department.
