Police in HCM City broke up a gambling ring, which was operating on a large scale in the city's Binh Thanh District.
It was reported that at 3pm on Sunday, more than 100 policemen from the Criminal Police Bureau, the Police Task Force and Binh Thanh District Police raided a gambling den in alley 348 on Phan Van Tri Road in Binh Thanh District's Ward 13. On seeing the police, many of the gamblers tried to flee, but the police had blocked all the exits. The police arrested 71 gamblers, and confiscated nearly US$10,000 in cash, four surveillance cameras, 77 motorbikes and several knives, swords and falchions.
The 2,000sq.m gambling den was being run by Nguyen Hoang Kiet, 43, a resident of Binh Thanh District.
Kiet told police that the gambling den had been operating for about a year. It attracted 70 to 100 gamblers every day, but they had to be introduced by a broker.
The case is being investigated by the police.
