A video footage recorded by reporters of Tien Phong (Vanguard) newspaper at some police stations on Tuesday was widely circulated among online newspapers and in social media.

The footage showed traffic offenders giving VND100,000-200,000 (US$4.4-8.8) in cash to some of the policemen, while some offenders placed the money in the work documents of the policemen.

The policemen were seen not returning the money and letting the offenders go without booking them for their offence.

According to Tien Phong newspaper, these activities were recorded at three police stations. One was near Duong Bridge in Gia Lam District, while the other two were at the Thai Ha-Hoang Cau intersection in Dong Da District and Nguyen Phong Sac-Tran Quoc Hoan intersection in Cau Giay District.

Speaking to the newspaper, Thang said the policemen shown in the video had been temporarily suspended from work.

“We have formed working groups to investigate and clarify the reported information,” he said, adding the situation had been reported to leaders of the Ha Noi Police Department.

Nguyen Duc Chung, chairman of the Ha Noi People’s Committee, on Tuesday assigned the director of the Ha Noi Police Department to conduct a thorough investigation into the case, take strict action against the errant policemen, if found guilty, and report to the committee and inform the media before March 20.
