Army newspaper celebrates 60th anniversary
National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong has praised the army-run newspaper, Quan doi Nhan dan (People’s Army), for enthusiastically contributing to promoting patriotism and the spirit of national unity, as well as solidifying trust among officers, Party members, the entire army and people over the past 60 years.

NA Chairman Trong praised the newspaper for firmly grasping the Party’s viewpoints and guidelines and keeping abreast of reality to reflect in a timely and vivid manner the revolutionary and patriotic movements of the armed forces and the people during its development over 60 years.
He praised it for strongly supporting revolutionary heroism and encouraging the army and people to surmount all severe challenges and hardships to gain independence, freedom and reunification for the country.
The NA Chairman urged the paper to focus on spreading news on people-army relations, tasks of building the people’s defence, the people’s preparedness to defend the Fatherland, and the strong people’s army, which is ready to protect the people and fulfill all assignments ordered by the Fatherland.
He reminded the paper’s staff that in preparation for the Party’s 11th national congress, Quan doi Nhan dan newspaper should work as an important channel to deliver officers, Party members, people and soldiers’ comments on the congress’s draft documents.
The paper should also concentrate on discovering new elements as well as new and efficient production methods, and highlight patriotic and emulation movements and the implementation of policies and guidelines of the Party, State and army, NA Chairman Trong said.
ASEAN Women’s confederation closes
The 14th General Assembly of the ASEAN Confederation of Women’s Organisations (ACWO) closed in Hanoi on October 20 after adopting a resolution for the 2010-2012 period.
The resolution focuses on ensuring gender equality to implement human rights, sustainable development, hunger alleviation and poverty reduction, and minimising natural disasters’ impact as mentioned in many international documents including the Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA), the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, the World Conference on Human Rights, the UN millennial declaration, the UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), and Agenda 21 on sustainable development.
The Assembly reaffirmed ACWO commitment to carrying out international documents related to promoting programmes to encourage ASEAN women’s participation in economic activities. It also proposed government of ASEAN countries build a mechanism to strengthen regional cooperation and promote women’s contribution to society.
ACWO members also agreed to improve the role of women in reducing poverty, protecting the environment, and dealing with climate change challenges.
80th foundation of VWU celebrated
The Vietnam Communist Party, State, mass organisations, and families are responsible for the women’s liberation movement.
Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh made this statement at the ceremony of the 80th anniversary of Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU) in Hanoi on October 19.
The Party leader congratulated VWU on various achievements and praised organisations and outstanding women for their contributions to the development of the nation and women nationwide.
He highly appreciated VWU’s role in protecting women’s rights, as well as uniting and directing women to implement the State’s policies.
VWU has greatly contributed to the women’s liberation movement, he said.
Mr.Manh asked VWU at all levels to fulfill the 10th Congress Party missions, as well as the Socio-economic Development Plan for the 2005-2010 period.
Mr. Manh also said that VWU needs to contribute their ideas to the Party's 11th Congress in 2011, and continuously support the campaign for “Studying and Following President Ho Chi Minh’s Moral Examples”. VWU should also fully implement the resolution made by the 10th National Women’s Congress and prepare for the 11th National Women’s Congress.
VWU President Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa said that, VWU has strongly developed over the past 80 years under the leadership of the Vietnam Communist Party and late President Ho Chi Minh.
Also at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan granted the VWU the Golden Star Medal. Four organisations and 13 individuals received other prizes.
Guangxi strengthens ties with Vietnam
Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong on October 20 met with Guo Shengkun, Secretary of the Communist Party of China Committee of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
During the meeting, part of the 7th China-ASEAN Expo, the Deputy PM expressed his admiration for Guangxi’s recent achievements despite the global economic crisis.
Vietnam has been Guangxi’s biggest economic partner for 11 years, he said, adding that the bilateral cooperation in culture, education, and tourism has always been promoted.
Mr. Trong praised the recent Vietnam-China Youth Festival, saying that it has helped bring into full play the traditional relationships between the two countries.
He also asked both sides to take the initiative to implement signed agreements in order to boost the relationships between the two countries’ localities.
Mr. Guo Shengkun said Guangxi will spare no effort to boost the cooperation with Vietnam, especially in economics, trade, and culture.
