Special ambassador’s efforts appreciated

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem yesterday, Oct 4, extended the working tenure of the Japan-Viet Nam Special Ambassador Sugi Ryotaro to March 31, next year.

At the meeting, Khiem said he highly valued the ambassador for his efforts in deepening co-operative ties between the two countries, especially in the fields of culture, arts and humanitarian activities in Viet Nam.

Khiem said this contributed to strengthening mutual understanding and trust between Viet Nam and Japan.

The ambassador said he would make more efforts to develop the bilateral co-operation and friendship relations and increase cultural exchanges between the two peoples.

Swedish, Japanese, Egyptian ambassadors welcomed   

President Nguyen Minh Triet yesterday, Oct 4, received newly appointed ambassadors from Sweden, Egypt and Japan in Ha Noi.

Swedish Ambassador Bjorn Staffan Herrstrom, Egyptian Ambassador Mohamed R. K. Eltaify and Japanese Ambassador Yasuaki Tanizaki presented their credentials to the President.

During his meetings with each ambassador, Triet welcomed them to Viet Nam and stressed that Viet Nam had always strengthened and widened its friendship and co-operative relationships with foreign countries in all fields.

The President and ambassadors discussed bilateral ties and comprehensive co-operation potential in the fields of economy, trade and investment in order to increase mutual development and contribute to regional and international peace, stability and prosperity.

Triet affirmed that Viet Nam would create favourable conditions for the ambassadors to fulfil their roles of taking the lead in developing relations with Viet Nam.

Vietnam attends IPU Assembly

A Vietnamese delegation led by Nguyen Van Son, Head of the National Assembly’s Committee for External Relations, is attending the 123rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Geneva.

The Vietnamese delegation also participated in IPU executive sessions from September 30-October 4.

The three-day assembly starting on October 4 is expected to discuss major issues such as cooperation between IPU and the United Nations, including results of the recent UN summit on millennium development goals.

Delegates will discuss a wide range of urgent issues proposed by member parliaments, including immigration and development, healthy legal frameworks to prevent violence during elections, improvement of election oversight, the role of parliaments in ensuring sustainable development through management of natural resources, agricultural production and demography, IPU President Theo Ben Gurirab said at the opening session.

Established in 1889, the Geneva-based IPU is the oldest multinational political organisation. It now has 155 member countries and nine inter-parliamentary groups.
