PM calls for more Cuban investment in Vietnam



Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung requested Cuba to step up cooperation and investment in Vietnam while receiving Cuban Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment Rodrigo Malmierca Diaz in Hanoi on Friday.

He asked Cuba to continue to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese firms to cooperate and invest in Cuba and encouraged the two sides to speed up trade activities, reaching a higher two-way trade in comparison with the modest figure of US$250 million in 2010.

The PM highly valued outcomes of the 29th session of the Vietnam-Cuba Intergovernmental Committee in Hanoi the same day, as well as results reached at working sessions between the Cuban minister and leaders of relevant Vietnamese ministries and agencies.

The two sides should accelerate economic, trade and investment cooperation, helping bilateral cooperation in these fields match political and diplomatic relations between the two countries, PM Dung said.

In return, Minister Rodrigo Malmierca Diaz, who is also co-chairman of the Vietnam-Cuba Intergovernmental Committee, expressed his pleasure with the steps of all-round development in the Vietnam-Cuba special friendship and cooperation.

He thanked Vietnam for its support and assistance to Cuba during its struggle for national liberation in the past as well as with its current socio-economic development.

The Cuban delegation also held working sessions with the Vietnamese Ministries of Agriculture and Rural Development, Foreign Affairs and Finance and Health, according to the Cuban minister.

He affirmed that Cuba always welcomes and creates favorable conditions for Vietnamese companies to invest in Cuba.

Cuba is ready to share experience and promote cooperation in fields of its strength such as the pharmaceutical industry and biotechnology, he said.

President receives Osaka Chamber President

President Truong Tan Sang received the Chairman of Japan’s Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry Sato Shigetaka in Hanoi on Oct. 6.

Sato, who is also President of Japan’s Keihan Railway Group, informed the host of the pace of the survey of the high speed Hanoi-Hoa Lac railway route that Japan is speeding up.

He said with hi-tech application experiences, Japanese businesses will continue cooperate with Vietnamese companies in various fields, particularly railway.

Sato said he hoped Vietnam will open more international air routes to Osaka, develop marine routes connecting Osaka and Vietnam’s central sea ports, improve industrial zone service quality and facilitate Japanese businesses’ investment in the country.

President Sang highlighted the rapid development of the Vietnam-Japan strategic partnership and experiences and technology of the Keihan group, saying he hoped the group will make active contributions to Vietnam’s infrastructure development, particularly its urban transport.

Sang took the occasion to welcome the efforts of the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry to encourage its member businesses to accept Vietnamese trainees.

He said he believed Sato’s visit will pave the way for building Japanese hi-tech industrial parks in Vietnam.

Vietnam creates all favourable conditions for the successful operation of Japanese businesses, President Sang said.

VN, Germany look to bolster relations

Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and State Secretary of the German Federal Foreign Office Emily Haber held the annual political consultation between Viet Nam and Germany in Ha Noi yesterday.

They discussed orientations and specific measures to promote relations between the two countries in all fields, particularly in the five key bilateral co-operative areas of politics and diplomacy; trade and investment; justice and law; development co-operation and environment protection; and education, science, technology, culture, communications and people-to-people exchanges.

Son and Haber also finalised the contents of co-operative documents which will be signed during German Chancellor Angela Merkel's upcoming visit to Viet Nam from October 11-12.

They affirmed their resolve to actively and efficiently implement outstanding co-operative projects such as the Viet Nam-Germany University, metro route 2 in HCM City, a vocational training centre in the north and other important projects.

They agreed to increase co-operation and back their respective candidacy at multilateral forums and international organisations, especially at the United Nations.

Son said Viet Nam welcomed and supported Germany 's increased ties with ASEAN, which would contribute to development in Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific.

In return, Haber said Germany affirmed its support for Viet Nam's expanding comprehensive co-operation with the European Union.

They also discussed regional and international issues of common concern.

Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh also received State Secretary Haber yesterday and spoke highly of the development of the Viet Nam-Germany relations in recent years.

He affirmed that Viet Nam would work closely with Germany to prepare for Chancellor Merkel's upcoming visit to Viet Nam, which would bring relations between the two countries to a strategic height with strong, deep and efficient development for the interests of the two peoples and for peace, stability and development in the region and the world.

President hosts reception for Japanese guest

State President Truong Tan Sang received President of the Japan-Vietnam Friendship Parliamentary Alliance (JVFPA) Takebe Tsutomu in Hanoi on October 7.

At the meeting, Takebe thanked the Vietnamese Government and people for their support for the Japanese people in coping with the recent earthquake and tsunami.

He expressed his pleasure at the continuously enhanced Japan-Vietnam friendship alliance relations and pledged that the JVFPA will make all-out efforts to strengthen the friendship with Vietnam.

For his part, President Sang said he was delighted at the great achievements the Japanese government and people have recorded in restructuring disaster-hit areas.

He spoke highly of Takebe’s contributions to the development of the friendly cooperation between the two countries.

The President used the occasion to thank the Japanese side for its official development assistance for Vietnam although Japan is focusing on post-disaster recovery and restructure.

Vietnam hopes to step up economic and trade cooperation with Japan through the implementation of major projects signed by the two countries’ leaders, Sang said.

Nam Dinh increases cooperation with Laos’ Udomxay province

A delegation from Vietnam’s northern Nam Dinh province led by Deputy Secretary of the provincial Party Committee Nguyen Khac Hung worked with a high-level delegation from Laos’ Udomxay province headed by its Governor Khamla on October 7.

At the meeting, both sides informed each other of the socio-economic, national defence and security and political situations in their respective localities, while expressing their satisfaction at the achievements and effective cooperation they have recorded in recent times.

Udomxay province praised Nam Dinh’s positive and effective assistance in agricultural production, training postgraduates and providing a total investment of VND6 billion to build a culture house located in the centre of Udomxay province.

The two sides agreed to continue promoting future cooperation by conducting annual exchange visits among high-level delegations, performing political tasks and reviewing cooperation efficiency in the agreed areas and issues of mutual concern.

In terms of education and training, Nam Dinh will continue creating the best possible conditions for nine Udomxay students currently learning at Nam Dinh’s universities to finalize their study as scheduled.

In terms of culture and sports, the two provinces will share experiences in organizing upcoming national sports festivals.

They will also discuss ways to build and manage industrial parks, and boost cooperation in drug and crime prevention and control.

Regarding investment cooperation, the two provinces agreed to facilitate their businesses’ implementation of projects in line with their capacity and the two countries’ laws.

To strengthen the ties of friendship and solidarity, both sides will intensify sharing experiences among leaders in guiding the implementation of tasks for socio-economic development, reinforcing national defence and security and building a transparent and powerful political system, thus bringing the Vietnam-Laos relationship to a higher level.

Vietnam to attend anti-corruption conference in Morocco

A Vietnamese delegation will attend the 4th conference on the State Parties to the UN Convention Against Corruption (CAC) to be held in Morocco from October 24-28.

The delegation will be led by a deputy chief of the Government Inspectorate, according to a decision recently signed by Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai.

The State President ratified the UN Convention Against Corruption on June, 30, 2009. The convention aims to increase the efficiency and capacity of the fight against corruption through effective cooperative measures.

Vietnamese army general’s US visit

General Vo Tien Trung, Director of the Vietnam Defence Academy, made a presentation on Vietnam’s defence policy at the US National Defence University on October 6.

In the presence of Vice Admiral Rondeau and a number of reporters from AP and Reuters, General Trung first summed up the Vietnamese people’s glorious history of national construction and defence through different stages from the feudal times to the two recent protracted wars of resistance against foreign aggression.

Regarding Vietnam’s defence policy, General Trung emphasized that Vietnam is building a strong defence system not to stage wars against others but to rid the country of war elements and maintain domestic security and political stability.

Vietnam’s defence policy aims to protect the country’s independence and sovereignty with all-people strength.

During his presentation, General Trung answered US scholars’ questions about China’s intentions behind its peaceful rise, Vietnam’s geopolitics, and its defence ties with the US.

Mr Trung added that the US and Vietnamese defence academies will have a regular exchange of visits by both lecturers and trainees.
