VietNamNet Bridge – Reasoning that the output of alumina of the Tan Rai and Nhan Co bauxite factories is low, it is unnecessary to build the deep water port of Ke Ga in Binh Thuan province, the Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) has decided to stop the project.

An official of Vinacomin said that the Ke Ga deep water port is designed to serve the transportation of alumina of Tan Rai and Nhan Co factories. But the alumina production scale is not big enough, so the group has decided to stop the project.

The official said that the alumina output of Tan Rai and Nhan Co pants is only about 600,000 tons per year, while the handling capacity of the Ke Ga Port is up to 35 million tons.

According to Vinacomin leaders, alumina will be transported via the Go Dau Port in Dong Nai. In addition, Binh Thuan is building the Vinh Tan port as an alternative.

Vinacomin said project investment costs were not large because Ke Ga Port has not been started. "Ke Ga Port project just stops at the pre-feasibility study so the cost is modest," the Vinacomin official said.

The Ke Ga Port is scheduled to be built in Tan Thanh commune, Ham Thuan Nam district, Binh Thuan province. The port has a length of about 2 km, with a total area of about 366 hectares of both land and water area.

According to plan, the port construction is divided into four stages, with the handling capacity of 3.5 million tons per year after two years of construction and 35 million tons per year in 2020.

To implement this project, Binh Thuan authorities has decided to revoke land of and cancel 12 tourism projects within the port boundaries.
