VietNamNet Bridge – Floods caused by Typhoon Vicente, which has faded in Vietnam’s northernmost mountain areas after passing through China’s Guangdong province, has left at least six people dead and four others missing.

The tropical storm’s circulation has caused prolonged heavy rains leading to floods in many northern provinces, causing damage to human life and property, local steering boards for flood and storm prevention and control reported yesterday, July 26.

In Tuyen Quang Province, a downpour lasting from the evening of July 25 until the next morning caused great damage to crops and killed a 28-year-old woman, Nguyen Thi Thu, and her two children, who were 5 years old and 4 months old, in a large rockslide in Thang Quan Commune, Yen Son District.

By 6 pm yesterday, authorities had evacuated 90 families in four communes, Tan Linh, Minh Xuan, To Mau and An Lac, which had been seriously submerged in floodwater caused by the rising Chay River.

Hundreds of hectares of rice and other crops have been destroyed or damaged in the flooding.

In Lao Cai Province a 47-year-old man, Tran Van Truong, a native of Phu Tho Province, went missing on Wednesday afternoon after being swept away by a flashflood from a stream in Cam Duong Commune, Lao Cai Town.

The province had earlier experienced elongated and heavy rains that caused many rivers and streams to rise, leading to serious inundation in several areas, including Cam Duong.

In Son La, a long downpour caused flashfloods from two streams, the Nam Pam and Muong Bu, in Muong La District’s Muong Bu Commune, killing an 8-year-old boy, Quang Van Quyen, and destroying many houses.

In Ha Giang a 48-year-old man and his wife, who was55, went missing after being swept away by floodwater in Son Vi Commune, Meo Vac District.

The flooding was caused by a heavy downpour that lasted from Tuesday evening to Thursday morning. Powerful floodwater also broke a talus in Yen Minh District, killing two siblings, four year-old Lu Thi Xuan and 20-month-old Lu Van Thinh, while injuring their mother.

In Lai Chau local rescue forces are searching for the body of an 8-year-old boy, Giang A Pang, who went missing in the flood that occurred in Tam Duong District on the evening of July 25.

Heavy rains also damaged 100 meters of interprovincial road 127, knocked down seven houses and swept away a bridge in two districts.

Meanwhile Cao Bang Province has suffered from severe flooding, with some areas submerged under two meters of floodwater. Landslides also occurred along many routes, including National Highway 34.

Provincial authorities are planning to evacuate people in heavily flooded areas to safe places.
