Dam leaks at Song Tranh 2 must be plugged by July 31: Deputy PM

EVN and the authorities of Quang Nam province, the home to Song Tranh 2 plant, have signed a statement on managing the power plant.
Accordingly, Quang Nam province asked the power group to entirely fix the leaking dam before the rainy and stormy season 2012, to deal with issues related to resettlement of local people and to take responsibility for the local people and to bear responsibility for the safety of Song Tranh 2 dam.
The province will combine with EVN to design a flood and storm control plan, relating to Song Tranh 2 and other hydro power projects in Quang Nam.
Though Song Tranh 2 project developer has lowered the water level of the reservoir to fix the leaking incident, local people are still worrying about the dam safety in the coming rainy season.
Chairman of the Quang Nam People’s Council, Mr. Nguyen Van Sy, said that the local government and local residents were not optimistic about the dam safety though some cabinet members had assured of the dam safety at the recent National Assembly question and answer session.
“According to scientists, the leak at Song Tranh 2 dam is too high compared to other dams in Vietnam that were built with the same technology,” Sy said.
The official said that in this year’s flood and storm control plan, the local authorities have prepared for evacuating thousands of families in Bac Tra My and Hiep Duc districts, which are located near the dam, in case of accident.
Vice Chairman of Bac Tra My district, Mr. Tran Anh Tuan, said the investor had told the local authorities that Chinese experts had been hired to deal with the leak. But Tuan said he did not know about the method and the deadline.
According to the investor, the leak will be fixed before July 31.
Earlier, the Ministers of Industry and Trade and Construction confirmed at the National Assembly session that Song Tranh 2 dam was still safe.
