According to Mr. Nguyen Duy Dao, Chairman of Xuan Thien commune, under the decision of Tho Xuan district on solving a land-related case related to a local man named Trinh Huu Hai, 39, on April 22, the commune authorities sent staff to clear Hai’s sugarcane garden to give part of the land to others.

Given that the decision was unsatisfactory, Hai’s family reacted, leading to clashes with the commune staff.

The commune police handcuffed two people, including Trinh Thi Hung, 35, a 4-month pregnant woman and a 13-year-old boy named Trinh Huu Son, and took them to the office of the People’s Committee of Xuan Thien commune.

After being released, Mrs. Hung felt pains in her stomach. She was afraid of harm to her baby so she returned to the commune headquarters to lie down on the desk of the chairman as a protest.

Hung lied on the desk from the afternoon of April 22 until the afternoon of April 23.

According to Hai’s family, Hai’s daughter - Trinh Thi Ha, 17, was also beaten. The girl was treated at the Hospital of Thanh Hoa province.
