The meeting took place as part of the celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19) and National Day (September 2).

The President said the Party and State had persisted in safeguarding national independence and territorial integrity.

He said the fight against corruption and wastefulness would be sped up to help the nation's sustainable development.

Former prisoners and the President recalled the days when Vietnamese people united in the struggle against invaders.

During resistance wars against French and US forces, tens of thousands of revolutionaries were imprisoned and brutally tortured by foreign aggressors, but they remained loyal to the revolutionary cause and contributed importantly to the nation's ultimate triumphs.

The prisoners raised concerns about shortcomings in the economy and suggested ways of building a strong Party.
