From September 21 to 24, President Luong Cuong and the First Lady will attend the High-Level Week of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), combined with bilateral activities in the United States. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dang Hoang Giang provided details on the visit, highlighting its significance and main agenda.

The visit coincides with the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and the 80th National Day of Vietnam.

“Through this visit, Vietnam affirms its role as a responsible member of the United Nations, actively engaging and contributing meaningfully to the UN’s major activities and global priorities. This visit comes at a time when the UN is looking for practical support and partnership from key and proactive nations like Vietnam,” said Deputy Minister Dang Hoang Giang.

During the trip, President Luong Cuong will meet with numerous world leaders and partners to strengthen bilateral relations and mobilize support from the UN, various nations, and international partners for Vietnam's major global responsibilities.

These include hosting the signing ceremony of the UN Convention on Cybercrime in Hanoi on October 25, preparing to chair the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in 2026, and running for several significant positions within the UN system.

President Luong Cuong will attend the high-level commemorative meeting of the 80th anniversary of the UN and deliver important speeches at the general debate and at a special global high-level event on climate action.

Over the past five decades, the Vietnam-UN partnership has developed into a robust and enduring relationship. The UN has consistently supported Vietnam through various stages of development, from post-war reconstruction to overcoming economic sanctions, and into the current era of deep international integration.

In return, Vietnam has taken an increasingly active role in the UN, contributing substantively and comprehensively with ideas, initiatives, human resources, and funding across all key areas of UN activity and priority.

In recent years, Vietnam has held important positions in key UN bodies focused on peace, security, legal frameworks, human rights, and culture.

Deputy Minister Giang emphasized that amid growing challenges to multilateralism and the UN system, Vietnam is expected to be an active partner in promoting multilateral cooperation. It is seen as a model for effective collaboration with the United Nations.

On the bilateral front, Deputy Minister Giang noted that the President’s visit takes place as Vietnam and the United States celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations. It is a moment to reflect on the journey from former adversaries to comprehensive strategic partners.

Both sides are expected to reaffirm their commitment to fundamental principles, including respect for the UN Charter, international law, political systems, independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. The visit also aims to deepen political trust and strategic confidence while promoting mutually beneficial cooperation.

President Luong Cuong will meet with U.S. leaders, representatives of major enterprises, financial institutions, longtime friends and partners, and prominent scholars. He will also host a ceremony celebrating Vietnam’s 80th National Day in New York.

These activities underscore Vietnam’s commitment to advancing its relationship with the United States, particularly in areas such as economics, trade, investment, and science and technology. They aim to further the implementation of high-level agreements and commitments between both countries, garner broader support for Vietnam-U.S. relations, and affirm the Party and State’s attention to the Vietnamese diaspora in the U.S.

Deputy Minister Giang stated that, after 30 years of diplomatic ties and two years of implementing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Vietnam and the U.S. have made significant progress, creating a model for reconciliation and future-oriented cooperation.

Thanks to the sustained efforts of both governments and citizens, Vietnam-U.S. relations continue to thrive, delivering impressive achievements.

The Deputy Minister recalled the 2024 official mission by General Secretary and President To Lam to attend the 79th UN General Assembly and the Future Summit, along with four high-level phone calls between Vietnamese and U.S. leaders since September 2024.

Through these engagements, U.S. leaders have increasingly valued Vietnam’s position and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting a “strong, independent, self-reliant, and prosperous Vietnam.”

Both nations are working to advance sustainable, effective cooperation in trade and investment, addressing trade imbalances. The United States remains Vietnam’s largest export market, with two-way trade surpassing USD 100 billion.

The two countries are also enhancing cooperation in investment and technology, particularly in future-oriented sectors such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence. Defense and security collaboration continues to deepen, especially in war legacy remediation, with progress in dioxin cleanup and assistance for people with disabilities.

Internationally, Vietnam and the U.S. maintain close coordination at regional and global forums, particularly within ASEAN mechanisms and the UN Security Council, in addressing global challenges.
