A police station to serve Tan Son Nhat International Airport should be established in the third quarter of 2015 to help ensure security, the chairman of the HCM City People’s Committee, Le Hoang Quan, has proposed.
The proposal was made at a the meeting on June 5 to review aviation security over the past three years.
The director of the HCM City Department of Police, Nguyen Chi Thanh, said security at Tan Son Nhat International Airport is complicated, involving not just the facilities but also thieves on flights.
People fly kites and balloons around the airport, posing a safety risk for flights, threats had been made against the safety of flights, and passengers were smuggling weapons, drugs and other contraband.
Since August 2013, 12 passengers were arrested to making threats against flights at Tan Son Nhat Airport, while 182 people were found with weapons. There were 200 incidents of disorder.
To help ensure security at Tan Son Nhat Airport, HCM City authorities want approval to install surveillance cameras linked to the municipal information centre.
Quan said a police station for the airport should be opened to provide quick response to threats, similar to one already established at Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airport.
