The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism recently addressed a citizen petition from Da Nang regarding the establishment of an official national costume for Vietnam.

This response was published on the ministry's website following the 7th session of the 15th National Assembly, where the matter was raised by constituents.

Minister Nguyen Van Hung acknowledged that on July 31, 2013, the ministry had approved a project concerning state ceremonial attire, which included organizing competitions and workshops to solicit opinions from researchers and experts nationwide.

However, the initiative to define a national costume has not reached a consensus, facing significant opposition. Additionally, there is currently no legal basis for implementing regulations on state ceremonial attire.

In light of these challenges, the minister recognized the proposal from Da Nang’s citizens and confirmed that the ministry would continue its research.

The goal is to develop and refine the legal framework necessary to establish decisions related to national and ceremonial costumes and broader national cultural symbols.

The issue of establishing a national or ceremonial costume is not new and has been a subject of public interest and debate for some time. Yet, the matter remains unresolved due to various reasons.
