The Traffic Police General Department (TPGD) under the Ministry of Public Security made its debut in Hanoi on January 19.

The General Department combines the Road and Railway Traffic Police Department and the Marine Police Department.

Speaking at the ceremony, Politburo member and Minister of Public Security Tran Dai Quang spoke highly of the achievements made by the TPGD over the past time, which have contributed to creating a positive change in ensuring traffic safety and order.

The Minister asked leaders of the General Department to promptly adopt all the regulations and mechanisms necessary to fulfil its obligations.

Thanks to joint efforts from ministries, sectors, localities and people, especially the determination of the traffic police force, decreases were recorded in the number of accidents, deaths and injuries. The death toll was reduced for the third consecutive year to below 9,000 people in 2014.

The force also arrested over 1,000 offenders, seized 45 heroin bricks, over 5,000 synthetic pills, and 226kg of explosives.
