Many people are using more desperate measures to avoid being apprehended by traffic police, often endangering the officers.

According to General Tran Dai Quang, Minister of Public Security, 37 cases left nine injured police officers this year. Quang proposed to increase the penalties and let police carry weapons. The Public Security Ministry and Transport Ministry will apparently try and be even stricter in investigating alleged road violations.

Major General Tran Son Ha, head of traffic police department said the current fines were not high enough and some localities didn't deal with violations seriously. He said drivers, who attempt to deliberately run over police officers, should face potential attempted murder charges. Ha also agreed to equip weapons to the police.

Tran The Quan, vice chief of the Ministry of Public Security's Legal Department, said that legal and practical grounds were good enough to carry out the proposal but what kind of weapons or when the police were allowed to use weapons should be carefully considered.
