According to the local media, on May 1, Ky Son District Party Committee in the central province of Nghe An reprimanded Mrs. Cut Thi Nguyet, the district’s Vice Chair for getting drunk many times, at parties, conferences and receptions.

In June 2011, when a flash flood swept away many houses in the district, this female official still received guests, drank, sang karaoke, and then got drunk.

Also in 2011, in a northern province, while the local people were urgently preparing to fight against the coming storm, several district officials were drinking with some business leaders in a restaurant. Among the officials were a district vice chairman, the chief of the natural resources and environment department and the head of the project management board.

The offensive story about these district officials was reported by a newspaper and it immediately attracted public attention.

Previously, many provinces and even the central government banned public servants from drinking during office hours.

There are many other cases related to drunk officials.

On March 30, 2013, a 7-seat car hit several motorbikes at an intersection on Ly Tu Trong Street, District 1, HCM City. Two scooters were damaged and three people were injured in this accident. After the accident, the driver quickly left the scene and about an hour later he presented himself to the police. According to the police, the driver was drunk and he is the deputy director of the HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

On April 17, Long Thanh district authorities in Dong Nai province suspended Mr. Dinh Van Ban, Chairman of Binh An commune, for getting drunk in work hours and beating a commune official right at the headquarters of the commune administration.

On May 5, 2012, Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, the headmaster of a secondary school in Bac Giang City, drove a car after drinking. Hung’s car crashed into a woman who was riding a motorbike. After the accident, the official did not take the victim to hospital but ran away. On the road, he hit the police motorbike and injured two police officers.

These are just a few prominent cases caused by state officials due to the consequences of alcohol.

However, these cases stir a question about the validity of the ban of public servants from drinking during work hours.
