Young talent Nguyen Hoang Thien, 16, failed to defeat veteran Do Minh Quan in the men's singles final of Binh Duong City Tennis Open, Becamex IDC Cup, on Sunday.



Despite the support of a horde of fans, the HCM City native lost to Quan 2-0 (6-2, 6-1).


In the third match playoff, Da Nang's Hoang Thanh Trung crushed Huynh Chi Khuong of the Army.


* Racing Boy's Tuan wins 125cc Mekong motor race


Racer Luu Thanh Tuan of Thanh Dat Racing Boy team won the National 125cc Motorcycle Race, National Top Clubs Cup, in Binh Phuoc on Sunday.


The event which is organised annually by the Viet Nam Cycling Federation, attracted almost 10,000 spectators.

Tuan's team-mate Nguyen Viet Linh came in second. Both Nguyen Huynh Luong of Great Hoang Gia and Minh Giai's Le Huy Hoa finished third.


Although Viet Nam's first professional 125cc motorcycling team, RebelUSA, also competed, they failed to finish among the top-spots.


At the same event held in Mekong Delta city of Can Tho last year, Tran Ngoc Sang of HCM City took the title.


* Xinh triumphs at Da Bia Mountain Marathon


Ta Thanh Xinh of Binh Thuan and Nguyen Dang Thanh Thuy of Khanh Hoa won the Da Bia International Mountain Marathon in the men's and women's event, respectively, on Sunday.


The event attracted 118 athletes from 15 cities and provinces nationwide and four teams from Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar, held at Da Bia Mountain in Dong Hoa District, in the central province of Phu Yen.


The event was part of the 2011 National Tourism Year in Phu Yen and other south-central coastal provinces.


At present, there are three other annual mountaineering events held in Viet Nam, which take place in Yen Tu in Quang Ninh Province, Ba Na in Da Nang and Fansipan in Lao Cai.


* Hosts face top seeds at Viet Nam Challenge


Vietnamese badminton player Hoang Hai Nguyen meets top seed Stanislav Pukhov from Russia in the men's singles first round of the Ciputra Ha Noi-Viet Nam Challenge badminton tournament, at Ha Noi's Trinh Hoai Duc Gymnasium today, March 29.


It will prove a tough task for Nguyen as he challenges world's 56th ranked player in the opening round.


In the women's division, Vu Thi Trang faces an uphill job when she plays against Chinese Taipei's Hsiao Huan Chen, who is the world's 58th seed.


The tournament has drawn over 300 players from 14 countries and territories, who will be competing in the men's and women's singles, doubles and mixed doubles for total cash-prizes of US$15,000.


The event closes next Monday.
