VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnamese chess grandmaster Le Quang Liem has claimed his first victory against a strong US opponent, Raymond Kaufman, in the 2014 Spice Cup at the Crowne Clayton Hotel in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Liem, who is seeded No.2 at the ongoing competition, defeated Raymond Kaufman from the host country after 31 moves in his first game.

On October 23, the Vietnamese player held his opponent, Kjartansson Gudmundur from Iceland, to a draw in his second game.

Among competitors with an Elo rating of at least 2.300, Quang Liem is playing in an open event of the Spice Cup, which will conclude on October 26 (US time).

Competition at the tourney is in the format of a nine round Swiss System. The top winner will win cash of US$5,000, while the first and second runner-up will receive US$2,500 and US$1,500, respectively.
