VietNamNet Bridge – Ca Dong ethnic minority people in Quang Ngai province, central Vietnam, not only name their babies after South Korean movie stars, but also mobile phone brand names.

A festival of the Ca Dong people.

Coming to the mountainous district of Son Tay in Quang Ngai province, one will see children with very strange names, such as Dinh Nokia, Dinh Motorola, Dinh Samsung, etc.

Because of their parents’ passion for Korean soap films, Ca Dong children are also named after Korean actors and actresses, for example Dinh (Ca Dong surname) Ka Ki Wel (Korean name), Dinh Un Giun Zo, etc.

Le Hoai Thanh, chief of the local Education Division, said that it is the right of people to give any name that they like to their children. Thanh said that the local authorities cannot make intervention in this issue.

However, the local authorities are calling local residents to name their babies suitably to their tradition.

Previously, the local media reported that Cotu ethnic minority people in Tay Giang district in the central province of Quang Nam named their babies after Korean actors, their idols.

These children have Cotu surnames and Korean name, for instance Pholoong (Cotu surname) San Diu (Korean name), Riah Thi Su U, Briu Thi Hy Su, Poloong San Oc, Poloong Hien U, etc.

In some villages in A Tieng and A Vuong district of Quang Nam province, some people even named their children after the brand names of Japanese motorbikes, for example Bhonuoc Yamaha, Honda, etc.
