VietNamNet Bridge – The central Quang Ngai Province has become the first locality to receive more than VND120 billion (US$ 5.28 million), funded by the World Bank, to build a facility for medical waste treatment.

Specialised bag is designed for medical waste.

The project is planned to be kicked off this year and completed by 2017. The investment capital includes more than VND100 billion ($4.4 million) from the World Bank while the will come from the provincial State budget.

The project is built on the campus of Nghia Ky dumping site in Hanh Dung Commune, Nghia Hanh District on 8,000sq.m area, and will be meant to treat toxic waste from hospitals and health clinics in the province.

Standing vice chairman of the provincial People's Committee, Le Quang Thich, said the management board of the project should carefully survey and estimate the amount of medical waste collected each day to know the capacity that such a facility should have.

As planned, the medical waste treatment area will be able to process 400kg of waste daily. Once classified, toxic waste will be treated with chemicals, grinded and compressed before being buried or burned.

Thich said the committee would revise the area required for building the project and complete all procedures to be submitted to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment for approval soon.

There are nine provincial hospitals, 13 district-level hospitals, more than 180 communal health clinics and 350 private health clinics in the province. The medical waste generated in hospitals and health clinics is estimated to be 680kg per day.
