The rescue work was completed by 10pm yesterday, said a railway official at the site in the province's Hai Thuong Commune. The accident occurred on Tuesday night, and it took almost 20 hours for 500 staff and five heavy cranes to clear the site.

The rescue work was rather tough as the site borders the busy National Highway 1A and one of the cranes fell twice early on Wednesday.

The collision between the SE5 train and a truck that was crossing the railway line killed one person and injured four, derailed three coaches, and heavily damaged the locomotive and several coaches.

According to the local police, early investigation showed that the truck driver was at fault, as he ignored the red light and took a turn to cross the railway line. Earlier, the truck had travelled on the highway in the same direction as the train.

The accident has put the railway sector on high alert regarding accidents at railway crossings.
