Toan, who was once a driver, started raising Dong Tao chickens (an endemic chicken species of Vietnam) in 2000. As this species of chicken became more and more popular, Toan had to find a new business direction. Five years ago, he read some news about peacock raising. He bought five pairs of peacocks from a man in Hai Duong and began building his peacock farm in Can Tho.

In just a few years, Toan had a large number of peacocks. He also raises mutant peacocks and rare peacocks.

Peacocks reach their adulthood after two years. The annual egg-laying season of peacocks is from December to March of the lunar calendar. Each female peacock can lay about 30 eggs/year. The life span of a peacock is 25-30 years. They eat rice, vegetables and fruit.

The prices for peacock vary, about VND1 million for a one-month-old Indian blue peacock, VND2-2.5 million for a white and five-colored peacock, VND3 million for a yellow-cheeked peacock, and up to VND9-10 million for a silver peacock.

Adult peacocks are priced from dozens of millions of VND to over VND100 million (over $4,000) per pair, Toan said.

Toan currently earns about VND300 million per year from selling peacocks.
