A resident of Binh Chanh District in Ho Chi Minh City caught a rare 1.2-meter-long monitor lizard, weighing over 7kg, after it crawled into his house. The resident then voluntarily handed it over to forest rangers.
On June 15, Mr. Truong Van Thuong of Vinh Loc A Commune, Binh Chanh District, handed over the rare monitor lizard to the Ho Chi Minh City Forestry Department for releasing back into the wild.
According to Mr. Thuong, he discovered the long, ferocious animal under his wardrobe while sweeping his house on the morning of June 14. Upon closer inspection, he realized it was a giant lizard. With the help of a relative, Mr. Thuong captured the animal and placed it in a cage.
After conducting an online search, Mr. Thuong identified the creature as a rare species and contacted the Ho Chi Minh City Forest Protection Department to ensure its proper care and safe release.
Forest rangers identified the animal as a female monitor lizard, weighing approximately 7kg. Its scientific name is Varanus nebulosus, and it is listed as a rare and endangered species in group IB of the forest animals list.
