Speaking with VietNamNet, MSc Dr. Calvin Q. Trinh, Director of the HMR Center for Rehabilitation and Physical Fitness, revealed that the patient, C.H.L., from District 10, Ho Chi Minh City, has been diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, a rare genetic disorder.

“The patient has very large and flat feet, with severe foot deformities. His pelvis tilts significantly to one side, and his spine is severely curved, accompanied by rib cage deformities,” Dr. Trinh explained.

L. had previously undergone chiropractic treatments at various facilities, but his condition did not improve. As he entered puberty, his rapid growth caused his body to become increasingly misaligned.

At the HMR Center, X-ray results showed severe deformities, including misalignment of all ankle and knee joints, a tilted and rotated pelvis, and an S-shaped spinal curvature exceeding 40 degrees.

The patient was placed on a personalized musculoskeletal correction program aimed at addressing the misalignments and preventing further deterioration during puberty.

After 20 therapy sessions, the patient’s pelvis had significantly improved, showing reduced leftward tilt. By the 40th session, his pelvis was fully aligned, and his spinal curvature had improved by nearly 20 degrees, restoring his body to a straighter axis.

Understanding Marfan syndrome

According to Dr. Calvin, Marfan syndrome is a rare condition affecting approximately 1 in 10,000 people. It impacts the bones, lungs, eyes, heart, and blood vessels.

The most distinctive features of this disorder include being tall and thin, disproportionately long arms, legs, fingers, and toes, and abnormalities such as a protruding or sunken chest, spinal curvature, loose joints, and large, flat feet.

Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and preventing complications, as the syndrome often affects multiple body systems. In L.’s case, early intervention through physical therapy has significantly improved his posture and mobility.
