VietNamNet Bridge – A case of Vohwinkel – a rare disorder syndrome causing limb self-amputation has been found for the first time in Ho Chi Minh City, said the Cho Ray Hospital on August 29.

The patient is an 18-year-old boy in Thu Duc District who was sent to the hospital on August 13 in an anaemic condition due to chronic inflammation, with his completed gangrened hands and feet.

He was then told to have disease symptoms since his early childhood, with honeycomb-like calluses and itchiness on the palms and soles, resulting in self-amputation of the hands and feet.

According to doctor Thanh Thanh from the Cho Ray Hospital, Vohwinkel syndrome is a rare disorder, with only 30 cases have been reported so far in the world medical history, but it is not an infectious disease and can be treated with specific remedy.

The patient’s itchiness and stench have eased after one day under treatment with Retinoid, he said, adding that he is now under further treatment and supervision.
