The four gibbons, whose scientific name is Nomascus leucogenys, weighed between 3-5kg.

Officials from the department and provincial police seized two white-cheeked gibbons during a surprise raid on a premises in Thuan An Town. The gibbons were being kept by a company that looked after animals, but the business's owner failed to show any documents related to the gibbons' origin.

Two other gibbons were discovered being kept in a house in Tan Uyen District.

All four of the white-cheeked gibbons are now being taken care of by the provincial Forest Management Department.

Dinh Van Vong, deputy director of the department, said white-cheeked gibbons can be found in the north and north-central parts of the country but are extremely rare. The gibbons are a protected species and it is illegal to hunt, trade or keep the animals.
