Fishermen in central Thua Thien - Hue yesterday have released an individual of green sea turtle, which is listed as an endangered species by International Union for Nature Conservation (IUCN), to the ocean.
The turtle was caught accidentally in Tam Giang lagoon by a local fisherman in the province's Quang Dien District, who was fishing by net on Thursday afternoon.
The turtle is 40cm wide and 50cm long, weighing 12kg. Local aquaculture authorities identified the turtle an individual of Chelonia mydas in Cheloniidae family, which are endemic to Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
According to local Department of Seafood Exploitation and Protection, nine out of 10 turles found in the lagoon and local beaches have been rescued and sent back to the ocean in the recent time.
