At almost 11 p.m., To Vinh Quang, a staff member of Thong Tin Company, arrives at a restaurant on Tran Quang Khai Street in HCMC’s District 1 to trap rats at the eatery’s request. Quang says his job begins when the restaurant is close.

This restaurant often signs contracts with Thong Tin Company to eliminate rats on a regular basis. It may take about four nights to wipe out all the rodents at similar eateries, he added.

Tools for catching rats include 30 traps, rat glue and sausage as bait. Quang explains that in addition to steamed rice, bread, fruit and meat, sausage has an appealing smell, so hungry mice can be easily attracted to the traps.

At midnight, Quang begins to place traps all over the restaurant, especially in the pantry. It often takes nearly two hours to put all the traps in place. He leaves the restaurant and comes back before 6 a.m. to collect the traps and rats.

Quang says he only works at night. The most time-consuming part is to apply glue on the traps and put the traps at the right place.

Saleswoman Tran Linh Chi of Thong Tin Company says the cost of the service is VND4,000-VND5,000 per square meter depending on area and number of rodents caught.
