Hoang Thi Thanh of Military yesterday won and set the first record in the women’s marathon event with a new record of 2: 45.09.

The old record of 2:45.34 belonged to retired Pham Thi Binh of Quang Ngai set up in 2013.

The new champion said she was surprised with her achievement as she had never made it in 2:48.00. It seemed that the cool weather key element to help her run faster.

Tang Van Hai from Vinh Long triumphed in the men’s hammer throw with a 51,94m result. He beat his own record of 51.68m set two years ago.

His female teammate Nguyen Thi Hong Thuong threw a distance of 48.40m in the discus event, knocking down Soc Trang’s Le Thi Lai’s record of 46.08m made last year.

In the third day of competitions, Da Nang’s siblings Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc, who got married last week, and Nguyen Thanh Ngung, defended their respective titles in the women’s and men’s 20km walking races.

Phuc finished her race with a time of 1:45.04, while her younger brother Ngung needed 1:33.31 to reached the cross line.

Other winners of the day were Pham Thi Thanh Truc of Vinh Long in the women’s hammer throw (49.77m); Tran Minh Tuan of Vinh Long in the men’s discus (45,06m); Truong Thi Thu from Thanh Hoa in the women’s pole-vault (3.70m); Nguyen Van Hue of Hai Duong in the men’s pole-vault (4.40m) and Bui The Anh of Military in the men’s marathon (2:24.33).

After three days of competition Military are till on top of ranking with five golds. The championships continue today with 200m, 400m hurdle and 1.500m events among others.
