The new reddish streak was spotted near aquaculture cages in Ha Tinh Province.

Phan Duy Vinh, deputy chairman of the province’s Ky Anh District, said residents from aquaculture farms in Ky Loi Commune reported that they had spotted a reddish streak on Monday morning. Soon after, environmental officials went to the site and collected samples for testing.

The reddish streak was about 30 metres long and dissolved in sea water after some hours.

In January, residents had spotted a reddish streak and reported it to authorities. The results of the test by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment stated that it had been caused by pollution from aquaculture. The commune is located near Vung Ang Economic Zone.

Later, in February, a reddish streak appeared in Son Duong Wharf in the economic zone. This time the ministry’s test results said the streak had been caused either by algal bloom or a red tide.

Reddish streaks also appeared in central Thua Thien-Hue Province and Da Nang City in February. Local environment departments there collected samples, but they too have come up with different reasons. While Thua Thien-Hue officials attributed it to a colour-changing algal process, Da Nang officials said the colour was caused by the floating eggs of a tiny shrimp species.
