Dang Minh Tuan’s named appeared in local newspapers two months ago when the new academic year began, after he failed the exam for the most prestigious school in Hanoi.

Tuan is well qualified with excellent marks at high school, prestigious foreign universities and many scholarships and prizes won at international competitions.

While Tuan’s successes are not widely known, his fame is largely due to his failing the civil service exam.

Under current laws, if someone fails the civil service exam, he cannot be recognized as a civil servant, and has to work under a fixed-term labor contract signed with state agencies.

However, recently Tuan was appointed the deputy director of FPT High School. He took the office on October 1, just one month after all of the news reports about the exam.

Dam Quang Minh, President of FPT University, said Tuan has been assigned the task of establishing processes and standards for teachers and work at the high school.

FPT High School, together with FPT University, which specialized in technology majors, are schools set up by FPT, the largest information technology group.

The teaching and learning model applied at FPT schools has attracted special attention from the public, as FPT has been a pioneer in reforming teaching methodology to conform to international standards.

Explaining the appointment, Minh said that the management board had invited Tuan to work for FPT school in a special recruitment decision, as part of its policy on recruiting talent.

“We try to express our compassion and respect towards talented and qualified workers of the school,” Minh said.

He went on to say that Tuan has quickly adapted to the new working environment. Being a responsible teacher, Tuan’s contributions have had positive impact on the teaching and learning of FPT High School.

Besides his work as a teacher at FPT High School, Tuan also serves as the coach of the team of selected excellent students.

Along with his impressive learning record, Tuan once won second prize at a national physics competition for high school students.

He was a student at Hanoi University of Natural Sciences, and was later granted an Odon Vallet scholarship to study at Paris 11 University. He was a  postgraduate at Lyon 1 University and an intern at the European Atomic Energy Center.

Tuan turned down job opportunities overseas and returned to Vietnam to work as a general school teacher.

At an international math competition organised in South Korea recently, some of his students won top prizes.
